Inevitability
There was a faint shimmer
of electrical tension
that we both gave off,
nearly indistinguishable from the glow
of computer monitors
as we sent each other coy messages
and talked out loud of mundanities.
We ignored it.
There was a sound of tightness
in the voice that had just said a little too much,
a sudden look of animal paranoia
in the eyes of the one who got
caught staring too long.
We talked harder.
Something massive
like eternity
shuddered on the edge,
something braced and quivering, about to break loose.
And still we made no mention
until morning.
